How do I get access?

Access is through WAYF - the same login you use to Itslearning.

It's important you use the links supplied by the library website as the permission to use the databases are imbedded in the links.

Access is available both from campus and from home (exceptions from this will be specified at the individuel links).

What are you looking for?

Information search - the basics

What exactly are you looking for?

Focus on your problem statement, and write down what you need, e.g.:

  • Subject: area, theme, perspective
  • Type: books, articles, companies, statistics, trends, research, law
  • Method: qualitativ/quantitativ, theories, data collection, interviews

Also, consider synonyms and alternate subject words.

When you have a more precise definition of what you are looking for, you also have better search terms. Be as precise as possible!

Where do you find the information you need?

Consider the type of information you are looking for and choose the right place to search, e.g.:

  • Books: library databases
  • Articles: databases, online
  • Company information: databases, online, internal documents
  • Statistics: public, external/internal, market organisations
  • Trends: news media, forums, online
  • Research: academic databases, Google Scholar, government authorities
  • Law: officiel government law, interpretations, comments

When you search the right place, your search results will be more relevant!

Remember to check the databases UCL supplies access to.

How do you search databases?

There are search tecniques to help target your search:

  • Limiters: limit your search results by applying limiters, e.g. language, year, geographical area
  • Truncating: add * to your search term, thereby including all possible grammatical endings
  • Frase search: when searching for two or more connecting words, bracket with quotation marks, e.g., "project management" to underline the importance of the exact combination
  • Boolean operators: use AND OR NOT between search terms when searching for a combination of different subjects
    • AND: limits your results by including both/all words in hits
    • OR: expands your results by requirering only one of the words in hits
    • NOT: excludes hits containing the word following NOT

If you need help searching a specific database, ask the library staff for help.

Having concluded your search, you need to assess the hits.

This is where you depend on your professional subject knowledge and critical thinking. Ask yourself:

  • Is it relevant, and can it be used for my purposes?
  • Does it fulfill my information need?
  • Check the author, and angle of information
  • Is the academic level appropriate?

If you haven't found what you need, go through the steps again:

  • What: adjust your search terms
  • Where: find other databases
  • How: try other search tecniques
  • Assess: assess the new results

If you found what you need, start writing your assignment!
